After losing to Fulham on penalties in the second round of the English League Cup, Tottenham Hotspur was eliminated

Tottenham, which has not won a trophy since 2008, has already seen one of its two genuine chances to win a trophy this year evaporate.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-153976″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-download-2023-08-31t171354.315.jpg” alt=”theindiaprint.com download 2023 08 31t171354.315″ width=”1373″ height=”762″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-download-2023-08-31t171354.315.jpg 301w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-download-2023-08-31t171354.315-150×83.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1373px) 100vw, 1373px” title=”After losing to Fulham on penalties in the second round of the English League Cup, Tottenham Hotspur was eliminated 6″>

After a 1-1 tie in regulation on Tuesday, Tottenham fell 5-3 to Fulham on penalties to advance to the second round. Davinson Sanchez was the only player to fail to score in the shootout.

Before England’s best teams have even competed, Spurs has been eliminated. The third round of the League Cup is when the Premier League teams who are this season participating in Europe play. Tottenham hasn’t suffered a second-round defeat since an ugly loss to lower-league Grimsby in 2005.

Fulham took the lead with an own goal from Micky van de Ven in the 19th minute, but Richarlison of Brazil equalized in the 56th.

Sanchez, the Colombian center back who received criticism from some Tottenham supporters last season, had his effort from his team’s third penalty in the shootout saved by Fulham goalkeeper Marek Rodak.

At Craven Cottage, Kenny Tete scored the winning penalty kick for Fulham.

Following Harry Kane’s transfer to Bayern Munich, Tottenham only has the Premier League and FA Cup to contend for this season, and the league seems to be a huge long shot for a squad with a new manager in Ange Postecoglou.

Richarlison and Van de Ven were the only players to stay following Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Bournemouth, so Postecoglou may come under fire for playing a depleted squad against Fulham despite the League Cup being one of the few chances to win a trophy.

Tuesday saw five Premier League clubs avert shocks against lower-league opponents overseas, with Brentford defeating Newport County only after prevailing 3-0 in a shootout. Newport tied the score in the sixth minute of stoppage time, resulting in a 1-1 tie.

With Jean-Philippe Mateta scoring a hat trick in the last 22 minutes, second-tier Plymouth was defeated 4-2 by Crystal Palace after falling behind 2-0. From the 58th minute, Palace scored three goals in a five-minute run to grab the lead.

After giving up an early goal, Bournemouth came back to defeat second-tier Swansea 3-2 away; Luton defeated fourth-tier Gillingham 3-2 at home; and Wolves thrashed third-tier Blackpool 5-0.

While Salford City, owned by Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, and other members of Manchester United’s Class of ’92, defeated Leeds 9-8 in a shootout to advance to the third round for the first time in its 83-year history, Wrexham, owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, lost 4-3 on penalties to Bradford.

On Wednesday, the remaining matches from the second round will be played, including a meeting between two Premier League teams, Nottingham Forest and Burnley, and fourth-tier AFC Wimbledon versus Chelsea.
